First Responders

Pipelines are the safest way to transport oil, its by-products and carbon dioxide. Although ExxonMobil Pipeline Company (EMPCo) integrates safety into all our facilities and operations, we constantly prepare to respond to emergency situations. And we want our communities to be prepared too. EMPCo sponsors the participation of local and regional emergency responders in programs, such as the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) HazMat Liquid & CO2 Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies training, designed to provide them with the education and resources to address pipeline and tank emergencies.

2026 First Responder Trainings

In 2026, ExxonMobil Pipeline Company is proud to sponsor first responder trainings at specialized facilities across the Gulf Coast. These trainings include classroom instruction in addition to hands-on exercises where firefighters can practice response techniques using industrial props that simulate releases.

Texas
We are sponsoring four HazMat Liquid & CO₂ Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies trainings in partnership with TEEX in 2026. The TEEX trainings take place at Brayton Fire Training Field in College Station, Texas.

Louisiana
We are sponsoring xx classes in Louisiana in 2026. Classroom training is held at River Parishes Community College in Gonzales, LA, and field training is held at the Louisiana Fire & Emergency Training Academy in Baton Rouge. Register for one of these classes in the Acadis Portal.

Introducing Our New Mobile Training Trailer

ExxonMobil and the National Association of State Fire Marshals are teaming up to take portions of the HazMat Liquid & CO₂ Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies training on the road! Previously only available at the Brayton Fire Training Field in College Station, Texas, this training will provide first responder teams with advanced hands-on and companion classroom simulations of emergency response scenarios – including an industry-first CO₂ pipeline release.

Expanding Online Resources

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company recently worked with the National Association of State Fire Marshals to make their existing Pipeline Emergencies online training program available to emergency response personnel within the company’s operating areas.

Partnering with MSFA

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company partnered with the Mississippi State Fire Academy (MSFA) in 2025 to develop a CO₂ Pipeline Emergency Response Training course to equip firefighters, emergency responders and public safety officials with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively respond to incidents involving carbon dioxide pipelines. Training topics include the unique hazards of CO₂ in both gaseous and supercritical states, recognition of release indicators, air monitoring strategies, tactical considerations and more.

The first class was held in September 2025, with another planned for November. We look forward to supporting the MSFA in its education efforts with more trainings being offered in the future.

Partnering with TEEX and NASFM

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company partnered with the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) and the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) in 2019 to develop a hands-on training course to further prepare firefighters along our pipelines and near our facilities to respond to emergencies. Responders receive valuable knowledge they will need to help protect their communities in the event of an industrial-type emergency. EMPCo has funded the training of more than 500 firefighters across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi at the world-renowned Brayton Fire Training Field.

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company funds the course fees, including lodging and meals, for class participants. Following successful sessions over the past years, ExxonMobil Pipeline Company is continuing its support with more trainings being offered.

About TEEX Training

TEEX training sessions include live, hands-on drills and scenarios, as well as basic education covering:

Types of pipeline markers and key information located on a pipeline marker
Pipeline right-of-way and basic design and construction features of a pipeline system
Common types of refined petroleum products transported in pipelines, basic physical and chemical properties associated with liquid gases, physical and chemical properties for specific petroleum products
Basic principles of liquid transmission pipeline operations and indicators of a damaged liquid pipeline
Types of aboveground petroleum storage tanks and safety features found at cargo tank truck loading racks
Emergency response tactics needed to address CO₂-specific hazards

2025 was a year of expansion for ExxonMobil Pipeline Company-sponsored first responder trainings. In addition to the four HazMat Liquid & CO₂ Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies trainings at Texas A&M’s world-renown TEEX Brayton Fire Training Field, we collaborated with the Mississippi State Fire Academy to design and sponsor a course specializing in emergency response to CO₂ incidents. The first two classes were held in September and November 2025. In Louisiana, we worked with the Louisiana Fire & Emergency Training Academy and River Parishes Community College to develop a program combining classroom instruction and field exercises on responding to multiple types of pipeline incidents including a CO₂ release. The first class was held in October 2025.
ExxonMobil Pipeline Company sponsored four HazMat Liquid & CO₂ Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies trainings in 2024, in partnership with TEEX. First responders from departments across the Gulf Coast and beyond participated.

And just as we’re evolving to be a leader in the energy transition, our safety training is evolving too. Since the development of the course in 2019, the training has adapted to provide the hands-on skills our first responders need to keep the communities we serve safe, including a controlled CO₂ release exercise.
In 2023, ExxonMobil Pipeline Company sponsored four HazMat Liquid & CO₂ Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies trainings with TEEX. New in 2023 was an industry-first module providing advanced, hands-on and companion classroom simulations focused on responding to a CO₂ pipeline incident.
ExxonMobil Pipeline Company sponsored two Texas A&M Engineering and Extension Service (TEEX) HazMat Liquid Pipeline & Industrial Fire Emergency trainings in 2021, held at the Brayton Fire Training Field in College Station, Texas. The second session was joined by ExxonMobil Pipeline President Steve Yatauro.

Though the pandemic interfered with countless programs, pipeline safety training and preparation didn’t stop. TEEX continued pipeline safety training in 2020 modified to CDC guidelines.
